LONDON (AFX) - Philips Electronics NV and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd both intend to step up production of DVD systems by opening new manufacturing plants, the Financial Times reported, without identifying its sources.

It said Matsushita is to start full scale production at a plant in China where it currently assembles DVD players and Philips is considering proposals to start production in Singapore.

Matsushita currently makes its players in Japan and Philips in Belgium, the report said.

The newspaper said Matsushita estimates that sales of DVD players have risen to 3 mln this year from 1 mln last year and that it expects sales to reach more than 5 mln in 1999.
