Just to amplify what Surfer Mike had to say, there is one really good and obvious reason why G* and I* phones will succeed in spite of any "World" cellular/PCS phone Ericsson etc may come up with. Even if you have a cellular/PCS phone that works with every cellular/PCS system (and nobody has announced any such thing!) these systems are not everywhere. G* and I*, on the other hand, will work even where there is no cellular system.

Even here in Pennsylvania, a relatively populous state where we have had more than ten years of cellular buildout, there are plenty of places where there are more trees than people and nobody's cellular system works, because no cellular provider is silly enough to put towers there.
