JBE, Maybe we should encourage people to vent their rage. Perhaps letting all their anger out here prevents them from taking it out on their spouses or children. I've always been suspicious of those people who equate intelligence with moral superiority. Some of the sweetest, kindest, bravest, most loving people I've ever met not had it all there in the mental faculties department. Conversely, some extremely intelligent people, with extra sharp analytical faculties, are sadistic sons of bitches who wouldn't bat an eye before sending you to the camps. Hence all those comments about people taking up oxygen. Pretty disturbing rhetoric in a political discussion, yes. But better such sentiments see the light of day here in a public forum then be acted out as domestic or political violence some time down the road.

jbe- I understand that my statement about Thomasso was quite strong and not in the best taste. There's quite a history here, however, and as far as I am concerned he owes me an abject apology that I have every reason to believe will not be forthcoming. I can back up my claim that Thomasso hurls insults without bothering to justify them, and I for one find it quite deplorable [I am not referring to anything on this thread]. By the standards of many- and he has many supporters on SI- that is quite an acceptable practice. It stinks, and so do the people who did it. Thomasso is one such person. As for saying "piece of excrement" is one of my favorite expressions- that, sir, is simply not true. I have said that exactly once on SI, and it certainly encapsulates my sentiment about Thomasso and people of his ilk you will make strong statements about other peoples character and intellect without backing up their claims. Would it be expecting too much of you to be honest in your criticism of me? <<"To think that such cretins breath oxygen and reproduce on this earth!" It would be nice if you would not put words in my mouth- I suggest, sir, that your attributing ideas to me that are not mine is corrupt. I agree, that may have been an excessive rhetorical flourish on my part, but it is an accurate measure of the contempt I have for thought process engaged in by Borzou that snidely mocks people like Kenneth Starr without engaging in their intellects. When I asked him some questions about what he was saying, he indicated he thought it was obvious. I would much prefer civility reign on SI, but as I see it neither Thomasso nor Borzou see fit to play by those rules. I understand you feel I have erred by fighting fire with fire, and perhaps you are right. I do sometimes say harsh things about people and their thought processes. It needs to be kept within some limits. I do pay them the respect of stating why I hold that opinion. That is more than the likes of Thomasso and Borzou will do [I hold Thomasso in much lower regard, as he does it personally; I have "only" seen Borzou do it to a public figure he wishes to ridicule]. Thanks for your words- except where you took it upon yourself to expand on my thoughts and to attribute them to me. Larry P.S. My assessment of Thomasso stands.

I seem to have become a subject of discussion on the thread! I wish I could participate in this interesting discussion, but I was cautioned by the webmistress Jill not to do so because a certain person complained that I was traducing, insulting, casting aspersions and slurs, and so forth. Of course, to deny that I was doing any such thing meant that I was questioning the veracity of the person who has now called me a piece of excrement. I mean, if I am obviously a piece of excrement, to deny this would be to suggest that the person who called me that was incorrect. And to be called incorrect is a most serious accusation. If I now disappear from SI, it will be because this rather indirect reference to someone will have produced another complaint to the authorities who operate the system, who will then terminate my membership. Which might, in fact, be the best thing they could do for me. Meantime, I thought I might add something to the Clinton discussion. I was very surprised to learn from a woman, who is exactly of Clinton's generation and with whom I was having a rather intimate conversation, that in her opinion oral sex was a substitute for the "real thing." That is, it was just something one did that stopped short. Perhaps an extreme form of "bundling." Or making out. This was not my view, but apparently some people really see it that way. She had spent years ago an entire weekend in a hotel with a man at the end of which they both considered that they had not actually "had sex," though they had done all sorts of other things. I think such a view must reflect something profoundly wrong with American attitudes towards sex.
