No asterisk. It's just like when Wills set the stolen base record in 1962. He was able to pad his record in a three game playoff with the Giants (which the Dodgers lost). I presume you say "another asterisk" because of the big asterisk that will note the fact that McGwire would have the record all to himself if Boob Davidson could see.

No, because St Louis will also have played 163 games. There was a tie with Pittsburgh earlier and the game was made up. McGwire BTW sat out that game. Maris had 163 games as well. Moreover, Ruth's record for 154 games was bested by both Mac and Sammy. With Ford Frick dead, no asterisk. Playoff game is part of the regular season. Hoping for the tie...McGwire will get the edge in history because of his awesome HR/AB percentage. TG
