Fiberman,

I would certainly take Conner Technology as serious. I listened to Peter Knight's (President of Conner) presentation at Diskcon. He presented some strong arguments for success.

a) They will be the ONLY HDD manufacturer focused entirely on ONE market segment, the tuff sub $100 OEM drive segment, where cost not capacity rules.

b) They will contract manufacture in China (best cost structure).

c) They have the pick of the litter from all the component suppliers since they all have enough capacity (and a strong financial need) to support Conner's needs. Conner will do very little R&D themselves, instead drawing on the R&D investments made by their component suppliers.

d) They will ONLY work with OEMs.(I.E., they have an strong relationship with Compaq. Compaq reportedly has kicked in $28 MIL). While one could argue they do have brand recognition (from the Conner Peripheral days) they will avoid the expensive retail channel.

e) This team has "been there - done that" and has had a chance to sit back and watch the HDD industry tear itself up pushing share versus profit. Surely they have seen enough good examples on how not to do it.

Now if the creek don't rise, I see a Conner IPO come this time next year.(IMHO)

Regards,
LT

Fiberman,

Sorry, I overlooked your questin about Conner. But LT has answered pretty much the same way I would. You just cannot discount Conner or the team he has assembled. It will make for very interesting watching IMO.

Best,
Stitch
