Philip Elmer DeWitt, the author is an old Mac activist. He used to attend the NYMUG meetings and various other Mac meetings in NY; always worked for TIME, even way back then.

P.S. DON'T FORGET TO TAKE THE PC vs. MAC SURVEY
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE!

The question posed is "Which is a better computer?". It's currently running ~91% Macintosh vs. ~9% PC.

Yes Mr. Ebert. When it comes to Virtual PC, or any other manifestation of Windows piggybacked onto the Mac's own refined OS, IT IS THE PRINCIPLE of the thing. After all,... Windows is a lot of excess overhead. There's the HD space. There's the extra time in managing a separate environment. There's the confusion of mixing environments. It's like retrofitting a gas engine to run both gas and diesel. It's like owning two boats and only one motor. It's like having to work where there's a party going on. I could go on.

Going dual OS is a great thing to be able to do, if one has sufficient needs in both environments to make it worthwhile. However, if one has only one need in the other environment, the leverage gained is often lost in the energy expended.

Thanks for a great column!

re: Andy Grove Loves His iMac

This is precisely why I have an equal number of INTC shares to my AAPL shares. This guy is not stupid...
