GM, I agree the smart card could be used for personal identification as well as financial exchange.

However, the US Treasury would probably disagree with you that banks will no longer have to deal with rolls of coins. In addition to the new bill that will replace the $20 bill (the $100 and $50 have already been replaced with new bills), there will be a $1 coin to replace the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

Not only will there be a new $1 coin, but the Treasury is planning to change the design (on the back of the coin) at regular intervals to stimulate investor interest.
