I was hesitant to tell the anecdote about my grandfather's brother because I agree that anecdotal evidence is not vey reliable. But the point of the anecdote was not that the violence occurred but that it was accepted as being appropriate behavior. Wether it would occur or not today is less an issue than no one today would dream of accepting such behavior. That was the point I was trying for.

There are always exceptions to Sturgeon's Law. After all the law refers to them. And optimist could say that since 95% of everything is crap, the good news is that as much as 5% is quality ;) I would agree about Barbara Tuchman. Btw SI demonstrates the law as well. Most threads are full of nonsense but there are a few, such as this, with quality discussions.
