Thirteen Percent of All New PCs Fail to Start Out-of-the-Box,

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HWP - news), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL - news) and Gateway (NYSE: GTW - news) topped the list of the 11 brands Windows Magazine evaluated--92% of H-P owners report that everything worked well on their first startup, while 91% of both Dell and Gateway users said the same, well above the 87% average for all vendors.

According to Second Annual Windows Magazine Tech Support Survey
Overall, Dell and Hewlett-Packard Were Rated the Most Reliable PC Vendors

MANHASSET, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 24, 1998-- An astounding 13% of all new computers purchased are dead-on-arrival and fail to start-up on their very first boot, according to the second annual Windows Magazine Tech Support Survey. Results from the Survey were published this week in the magazine's October '98 issue and online at winmag.com.

''Buying a new PC is a major investment in both time and money,'' said Eileen McCooey, Executive Editor of CMP Media's Windows Magazine. ''Yet the PC industry continues to lag behind others when it comes to reliability. If 13% of all new cars failed to start on the first turn of the key, Detroit would be faced with a tremendous outcry from Ralph Nader and other consumer advocates. PC manufacturers need to work to immediately reduce this figure.''
