John - Re: ". It would seem therefore that the fear of big banks collapse is really the overarching dynamic in the market place. Are such fears warranted? "

Yes and no.

When Tech companies get decimated - like Intel - due to foreign economic problems, does our government come to their aid?

Hell no !

The FTC files suits against Intel for being "too succcessful" and not giving away their product plans to "customers" that sue them (Intel).

As for the big banks, I'm sure our erstwhile Federal Banking system will be ever so-cooperative in helping them through such troubled times - AGAIN.

As you pointed out, the New York Federal reserve Bank seems to be propping up the LTCM hedge fund/Debacle Du Jour.
