Les, I keep hearing that teachers fail "competency exams". I think that is true, but, also for 9th grade as you mention, there is a designated math teacher that presumably understands some math. The average teacher in a Ca high school can't do basic algebra, Im convinced of that... but the math teacher in the school does. With home schooling you then have this one person, probably the mom (who presumably was educated by this system) that is expected to have core competency in all areas incl math and science, I doubt they do. Core competency of your avg mom on all subjects vs. your avg teacher - probably not much difference, but jr high math teacher or history teacher v. avg mom is a different story entirely.
