China's TV viewers number 1.09 billion
SHANGHAI, Sept 24 (Reuters) - China has more than 317 million television sets and an audience of more than 1.09 billion viewers, the Wenhui Daily said on Thursday.

The official newspaper, quoting a survey by China Central Television, said 35.4 percent of all households subscribed to cable television and viewers were watching their sets for an average of 131 minutes a day.

China, the world's most populous country, has 1.2 billion people.

The industry figures were from a national survey completed in mid 1997, though the newspaper gave no explanation for the long delay in releasing the data.

Most of the viewers surveyed said they mainly watched television for information on key international issues and for policies of the Communist Party and government.

A similar survey in 1992 showed most respondents watched purely for entertainment.

News, special reports and television serials were among the favourite domestic programmes while police stories were among the most popular
