Well, the person I was talking to was from upper Indiana and the hotel room was in Chicago: pretty much central America.

I can't speak for all generations, but at one time the limits for "nice" girls were heavy petting that included some (still-clothed) breast fondling. That might continue to "third base" (i.e. genital fingering). But even if a woman's hymen was completely cleaned out by the foregoing activities, she was considered chaste.

With the advent of the pill in whenever it was, a lot more couples went on to complete sexual intercourse, but the emotional bonding that ensued could often result in a formal marriage without the compulsion of pregnancy.

What surprised me in my conversation yesterday was the idea that a woman's performing oral sex on a man could just be thought of as one further extension beyond heavy petting or mutual masturbation. I may be giving something away about myself when I say that I thought of it as something beyond rather than on this side of complete genital sexual intercourse. I do know that at least some women of Clinton's generation thought of it that way; I remember one woman's saying, "I wouldn't do that except for someone I REALLY loved."

But it does seem that for some persons everything short of penetration and ejaculation within the woman's vagina represents different levels of foreplay that start with, say, a pat on the shoulder.

I do think that for me and for most people, the placing of the penis in the mouth is a sexual act and that Clinton is, to say the least, disingenuous in implying otherwise.

One thing that truly alarms me is the idea that calling someone "sweetie" is a compromising action.

HILLARY SECRETLY LOBBYING MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO SAVE HUSBAND

First lady Hillary Clinton is one of the President's chief defenders on Capitol Hill, according to a published report, secretly lobbying Democratic Members in an attempt to head off impeachment hearings in the House.

The first lady is even planning to visit the Hill in the coming weeks to meet with the House Democratic Caucus, the newspaper ROLL CALL reported in Thursday runs.

According to the report, Mrs. Clinton has lobbied one key congressman in recent days, arguing that the president should be allowed to "carry on in the interest of the nation."

"If anybody should feel offended and treated badly, it's her, and yet she is standing tall," Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), one of the lobbied, tells the paper.

The first lady's high level of involvement in the process took one well-placed staffer on the House Judiciary Committee by surprise on Thursday morning.

The senior staffer told the DRUDGE REPORT: "[Hillary Clinton] can come over here and help us sort through the nearly 70,000 pages of evidence and tell us what is relevant, if she really wants to help the nation get on with business."

The first lady's office did not return phone calls seeking comment.

GORE-PLAIN-LANGUAGE

Just days after President Clinton was shown arguing over words used in his Paula Jones deposition in video testimony [It depends on what you mean by "is." It depends on what you mean by "alone."], comes Vice President Al Gore, who will present the Plain Language Award in the White House Roosevelt Room on Thursday. The Vice President will present a plain language award and discuss the importance of using plain and clear language in government documents.
