OK so Java is the platform, but is it THE platform to the exclusion of all others? I left the O8i rollout with a very uneasy feeling about the future direction of the D2K toolset and OAS. Every question that Larry was asked got turned into "Java, Java, Java". For example: Q: "What about the object-relational functionality that was expected in 8.1" A: "Yes we are still committed to object-relational, Java, Java, Java..." Get the picture?

I know plenty of shops that are building applications using OAS, many of them using Des2K to generate HTML forms and using the PL/SQL cartridge. I suppose that Oracle will just change Designer to generate Java code instead of PL/SQL. My concern is for the future of Forms and Reports where PL/SQL is so deeply embedded. Larry seemed to be hinting that OAS will still be around to deal with serving Web Forms and Reports but any HTML or Java code would be served directly by the O8i database.

As I said in my previous post. I think that they have this great new toy (did I say "toy", maybe I meant "tool"?) but are not quite sure how everyone outside of the labs will start to play with it. The four guys that Ray Lane had up on stage in his little panel discussion added little more than "we like working with Oracle". I would like to see someone actually using the thing so I can get a better handle on its potential.
