Ramsey,

The difference between the Fed and the HKMA is that the Fed didn't put up any of our money. They brokered a deal that kept a structure in place that would allow an orderly liquidation of the positions and prevented any confusion in the functioning of the US treasury market (where LTC had big repo positions).

The Fed supposedly pulled some strings because of the exhaustive list of respected financial gurus with ties to Long Term Capital, including the head fed of NY.
