There have been a some scattered extreme decisions, and a whole lot of extreme commentary and extrapolation by some lawyers reading those decisions.

I try to be careful about a lot of things, and also try to avoid giving any kind of personal offense in works situations (and most social ones as well -- arguing on SI excepted of course <g>). However, live with it as a policy matter? Never!!!

If every day that a boss comes into work he asks his secretary out, or every third day, and she continues to refuse with more and more discomfort, that clearly becomes harassment. Why -- because refusing again and again to get the message is either a form of needling on a sexual basis, and therefor constitutes creating a hostile work environment for her, or it carries an implied threat. Or could reasonably be supposed to.

If an exec. asks someone else in the organization three or four times, in a manner that conveys sincerity, and he genuinely believes he may win her over with the sincerity of real interest which his persistence demonstrates, that should not be taken as harassment, it seems to me. Even if it makes the woman a bit uncomfortable.

If at any time a woman asks a man in a workplace situation to please not ask her ever again, he ought to take her seriously. (Now if he tries once, gingerly, a year later or something, I wouldn't fry him.)
