Nike shares rise ahead of analyst meeting

NEW YORK, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Shares in Nike Inc. rose Thursday morning on expectations the athletic footwear company will make bullish comments to analysts later today in New York.

Nike's stock was up 2-5/16 to 41-5/16, bucking the broader market's downward trend with the Dow industrials off 89 points at 8065.

Officials at Nike were not immediately available for comment.

''The stock is higher today in anticipation of the company's analyst meeting this afternoon,'' said Michael Conn, an analyst at Gruntal & Co. who tracks Nike.

''The expectations are that it will be a positive event in terms of the company giving a bullish outlook for the next 12 months. There are very clear signs that they are seeing an improvement in their core U.S. operations, and are working diligently to minimize some of the impact from the global economic turmoil.''

Conn, who was due to attend the analyst meeting that takes place during trading hours, said he did not expect Nike to guide earnings-per-share numbers higher after reporting earnings just last week.

Nike reported that it earned 56 cents per share in its fiscal first quarter, beating Wall Street's estimate by 8 cents.<<<
