NY Precious Metals Review: Dec gold up $3.90 on weaker dlr

By Melanie Lovatt, Bridge News
New York--Sep 24--COMEX Dec gold futures settled up $3.90 at $296.40
per ounce after climbing to a 2-week high of $297.40 as the dollar weakened
against other currencies, particularly the yen and Deutsche Mark. Gold
rallied on short-covering, primarily by funds, triggered as a prime rate
cut by the Southwest Bank of St Louis escalated expectations that the US
Federal Reserve will announce an interest rate cut at Tuesday's FOMC
meeting. Dec silver jumped on the dollar's fall and started to strengthen
technically as it managed to stay above $5 per ounce support. Dec settled
up 11c at $5.153 per ounce after making a 1-month high of $5.175.
