Oil and gold answer.

I don't know about gold but Russia is a big exporter of oil. The higher the oil price the more hard currency (dollars) Russia receives. The more dollars the easier to defend the ruble.
I think that the 30:1 ruble rate is way too high and CNN just likes to sensationalize things. Right now the ruble is at 15:1 and has been fairly stable. Oil prices are rising, the government is almost picked and the economic plan will be out soon.
