Fiber Optic Networking...LU has plans..and so will CSCO.

Lucent Eyeing Optical Networks For
Growth

Lucent plans to maintain its growth by selling products in market
segments such as optical networks, wireless infrastructure,
communications software and data networking, and taking share
away from competitors in those areas, said a senior executive at
the data communications company.

Speaking at a press briefing here last Friday, Dan Stanzione,
executive vice president and chief operating officer of Lucent, said
the company is betting that entering the optical networks market will
ensure the company's lead in the next generation of networking
equipment. These kinds of networks are not expected to take hold
for at least two more years, Lucent executive said.

"The existing networks aren't going to go away," he said. Optical
networking "changes the nature of both worlds."

Lucent believes the wavelengths of optical networks will act as the
glue that supports the various protocols such as SNA or IP, network
technologies such as ATM or Frame Relay and backbone types
such as ISDN, fiber or wireless, according to Stanzione.

Implementing optical networks will allow VARs to program
wavelengths to support each kind of traffic, radio frequencies and
protocols that is transmitted over a network, Stanzione said.

Lucent also believes it can flourish amid old and new networks by
developing interoperability communications software, he said. This
kind of software "is really how these networks are going to work
together," he said.
