Pat - the problem is candidates have to suck up to the party for money, which bends opinions and positions in curious ways. If their thought on some topic doesn't align with the party hierarchy, they're economically doomed to bottom feed with independents.

Kind of makes all the interesting colors blend into grey.

Most cases I vote for the person, not the party. In this case I know the guy so I don't have to rely on campaign promises. At the local level we don't seem to candidates following the party line as much as at the state or national level.
