the key statement I read in the report was "manufacturing on their existing equipment" or words to that effect. In other words a quick fix.

Seems to read as if DDR SDRAM will only see a limited life span.
I think this will be similar to EDO memory. A lot of R&D dollars were spent developing it. It was obvious it wouldn't last so it was sold with little premium while it could be to cut losses. It will probably overlap the introduction of Rambus for a couple of years as a cheaper, relatively high performance solution.
