When I was choosing my online broker I didn't take Datek for only one reason: their service agreement sucks bad. Basically they can do whatever they want.

I called Datek and their explanation was that the ALTIF shares were borrowed from another brokerage and they want their shares back. The buy-in is on a "first-come, first-serve" basis, meaning that those who shorted ALTIF first are the first to have to buy the shares back. I guess seniority does not count for much at Datek.
