Stitch,

Lowering rates makes companies more profitable ... borrowing more $$ cheaper. As well as increased productivity over the last few years, the lowering of rates has contributed significantly to higher profits. The last thing you want at this point in time is for the unemployment rate to start to climb ... that means even less domestic demand for goods - at a time international demand is down. Also means less taxes, more U/I payments, welfare etc.
