If my memory serves me correctly, those two fabs started running wafers a little more than 1 year ago. Most likely they are of 0.35um technology. Today - overcapacity. Tomorrow, as in 6 months, - obsolete. Looks like Lucent and IBM will get to pick up half a fab for cheap and then convert these to sub-0.25um with new steppers.

The Cirrus CEO also made a statement about how hard it is 'to eompete against Intel's roadmap' since Intel is integrating stuff into CPU and chip sets all the time. LSI is in the right area. From now to the next upturn, they just need to keep going where they are already headed PLUS make sure that their manufacturing is top notch. They will be competing in high volume markets and manufacturing powerness is a must - just look at Intel.
