RE: Linux. A direct investment also would change how Intel has worked with operating system software companies. Generally, Intel provides these companies technical and marketing support. Intel, for instance, provides marketing support to Be Incorporated, maker of the Be OS.
So far, the company has not invested directly in operating system vendor companies, according to an Intel spokesman. Most of its equity investments in software companies have been in application or content vendors

More flash mem news. Macronix and VLSI to collaborate on system-on-a-chip designs

HSINCHU, Taiwan — VLSI Technology Inc. and Macronix International Co said on Monday that they will cooperatively design and produce system-on-a-chip products that utilize embedded flash memory. Initial production is set to begin in early 1999.

In the first phase of cooperation, Macronix will provide the design and fabrication expertise for the flash memory portion of the system-on-a-chip (SOC) products. VLSI will provide the necessary logic design and fabrication technology. The companies plan to design and produce parts for use in a variety of wireless communication and handheld computing products.
