Clark;

Thanks for an informative mail.

The three points you presented for the WLL are all valid and true. When compared to mobile, WLL is more robust in the sense that the handover is not required, they are cheaper to install and run and in many cases legislative issues favor them.

Meanwhile I adjust my opinion couple of notches to positive direction, and acknowledge that there is business in WLL, I still don't believe that it is hot:

1) it is very expensive infrastructure to set up not differing much from mobile in that sense
2) it lacks the mobile's sexiness
3) the target countries are not doing well
4) the potential clientele usually is not doing well
5) those who have money go mobile

IMO WLL has a weak business case. It will be difficult to whip up investor's interest in building WLL into some Brazilian favela. Have you seen how these folks look? Think about collecting bad debt. Also its better not be in the office when those guys pop in to complain that their line has been cut off.

Seriously speaking I think that WLL was designed before it was realized that in 90% of the places it is going to be deployed it has to compete with mobile and thus has a weak case. Clark's comment about legislative bias is true, however, and will make it a rational choice every here and there.
