Sean---thanks for your help--don't understand what 'mscdex' is but. if the new cdrom disc doesn't work either, I will give your note to a technician in my local computer shop and go from there. Before I got your note , I had called him and his off the top opinion-without looking at my config.sys -- was that my cdrom should be able to read and install everything. We'll soon see.
