It's about marketing

You've neatly summarized why Linux will flop in the consumer market. Why don't folks just eat generic luncheon meat? It's sensible, nutritious, and economical. Whatever happened to those "white label" cans that used to line supermarket shelves?

There will always be a segment that urges "sensible" self-denial to others, but the consumer market is driven by marketing not "common sense". CPQ and others sell image as well as economy with their sub-$1000 machines and that will continue as the price points of hardware continue to ratchet down.

On the subject of Linux apps.......

Seems to me this could lead to some real competition for Windows and Office 97.
