Ministry Schedules Feb EMV Smelter Sale - Bolivia

September 25, 1998

The Bolivian government will attempt to privatize the Empresa
Metalurgica Vinto (EMV) tin and antinomy smelter in February next year,
according to acting deputy mining minister Alvaro Perez del Castillo.

Perez was speaking after meeting representatives of sale adviser
Paribas, the French investment bank, due to present its final
recommendations October 21.

The privatization process was running within its timetable and
international companies, he said, adding that several international
companies were interested in EMV, located in Oruro in the department of
the same name.

Perez del Castillo said the eventual book value given to the smelter
would be referential only.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has authorized a US$230mn
payment to Bolivia's government to finance infrastructure and social
projects, IDB Bolivia representative David Atkinson said.

The US$230mn will be used in highway projects, basic health services,
education reforms, and reconstruction work of damage caused by the
climatic phenomena El Nino and La Nina.
