PC Unit volume forecast up 11%.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- World-wide personal-computer shipments should improve moderately next year, with unit sales climbing 11% in 1999, according to International Data Corp.

IDC, a market-research company based in Framingham, Mass., forecast that PC sales would grow to 89 million units in 1999, compared with 80.2 million in 1998. Sales in 1998 are expected to be up 11% from a year ago.

The company expects improvements in Asia Pacific and Japan, which have been hit hard by economic crises in the past year. Sales growth in the U.S. and Europe is expected to continue at double-digit rates in 1999, IDC said.

The company made the announcement at a meeting in Santa Clara. In the third quarter, IDC expects unit sales to be up 11% from the year-earlier quarter and up 14% in the fourth quarter. Revenue for 1999 could be lower, however, because many computer makers will soon begin selling computers for $499.
