It's real tough to put a single number on 'margin' requirements in the currency markets. They vary greatly based on maturity of the transaction and credit quality of the counterpart. But the leverage is greater than that available in equity margin.

You can get a good feel for rough levels by looking at initial margin requirements on the Chicago Merc. A @$75,000 deutschmark contract has a margin requirement of @$1500 which gives even an individual leverage of 2%.
