Warning, Definitely off topic: Since it is quiet out there, just an observation. The gold stocks are tearing up the track. Most up 50% or more in a month, coming off extremely depressed levels. With the Long Term Capital situation coming to light and the shocking impact this one fund had/could have had on the world financial system, gold is looking increasingly appealing to investors. Most disconcerting is that no one really knows the risk that the world financial system has built in. One thing is certain, the risk is much greater than was perceived until this summer, and with last weeks disclosure, the perception of risk was ratcheted up another notch. Deflation is spreading and Greenspan is finally cognizant of which way things are going. Make no mistake, he is more worried than he is letting on. Short rates will come down. The dollar is likely to weaken further. In the last 6 months, gold has moved inverse to the direction of the dollar. For the past few years it has paid to sell into every rally gold stocks have had. Maybe this will be the same, but after a possible pullback from an overbought technical condition, I believe there is more room to run. The market cap.of all the publicly traded gold stocks in the world is almost certainly less than one half that of MSFT. It is a thin market and there is little ownership. If there is a sudden desire to get in on the part of individuals and institutions in even a small way, the door is very small. With October just ahead and further disclosures to follow, there might just be room for another "safeguard" in ones portfolio. I follow ABX, NEM, and HM fairly closely, but gold stocks pretty much move as a group. October could be interesting, I just hope not to interesting. Best wishes for a profitable fourth quarter. Mike
