GI's MPEG-2 chip is from the Compression Labs purchase. They were a C-Cube customer in their Magnitude line. GI layed off the engineers working on a MPEG-2 decoder at Compression Labs. No work was done on this decoder, until the Broadcom/GI deal. They have only one year to get it to work. It didn't work in 1996. Then add Digital Dolby, and 5 or 6 others to get a one chip solution, not counting DRAM. It sounds like TCI needs a working MPEG-2/AC3 chip in 3 or 4 months, to have a working box, in volume, next Summer. I wonder what Broadcom found when they saw the research?
