Chip, I've just been watching over the shoulder a Shogo game here in the shop. One word -- Wow!

Simon says: My predictions for the coming year.

Building brand awareness in the gaming community was the first step. 3Dfx was able to do that with performance and features.

Now they're moving into the larger, shallower pond of system OEMs. How can they build brand awareness among the masses that will buy their product through this new channel? Some people wanted television advertisements. That would be the nuclear warhead approach. Effective but expensive. More efficient would be magazine ads alongside the OEM advertisements.

But the most important part of the advertising is going to be done by the OEMs themselves. In an OEM ad everything about a video card has to be worked into a single line. Most don't contain the manufacturer's name, let alone the chipset. 3Dfx is going to change that.

The OEMs try differentiating themselves by advertising 3D capability, 2X AGP and TV-out. Consumers obediently try and figure out what these features are and if they'll need them.

Now there's something new to put on that line. Something the consumers will ask their techie friends to explain and they're going to get a very enthusiastic response. Many of those techies are gamers, and when they see "3Dfx Voodoo Banshee" listed under features they're going to tell their friends to buy.
