Re. Why should Intel be so concerned about RDRAM production and acceptance all of a sudden.

Intel made it clear all along that it wishes to see the RDRAM technology become the de facto standard beyond 2000/1. Similar to its MMX technology that emerged a few years ago, Intel was even willing to license it to arch-competitors (AMD, NSM etc) to accomplish the same purpose.
