LT, very nice summary! I had the same overall impression that
there are better sectors to invest in than the DD sector.
I think I'll concentrate on technical indicators more than
before. There's no predicting when and why the big money will
return to these stocks. The charts will tell.

I'll hold the DD stocks I have.

Gottfried

<My report from the "Wall Street Perspective" session at Diskcon. Summary: "a bunch of bearish analysts telling the industry to focus on margins not market share". >

I wonder if Quantum hasn't made an attempt to get back to profit? You probably know the answers better than I, but at the annual meeting, Michael Brown claimed they didn't compete for every segment and did loose some unit growth and market share. Is this sincere?

Bigfoot is an interesting product and it's been a big seller into the sub 1000 PC, but can they make money here? They have great presence in desktop, but is this a profitable business model? Should Seagate make the unlikely decesion to exit desktop, would it be a great boost to Quantum?

Quantum's high end still looses money. They see it as an opportunity build on, but again it's predicated on taking market share. Would you recommend they get out of this area, or does a high end effort feed the desktop as a development stage for new products?

They loose money making heads. You have to wonder why they bother. Still, they've installed a new manager who's suppose to turn MKQC around, or they might finally shut it down. An idle threat?

More than anything, they claim to be simplifying their product road maps. Fewer parts used across compatible platforms. Sounds like an obvious solution. Great strides in reducing returns through quality measures and improved design? Fact or fiction?

Can these steps be construed as an effort to make a profit? Or are they still side stepping the obvious?

New investment in tape libraries ATL and the proprietary platform of DLT. Super DLT will carry the torch and be on time?

I honestly don't know what to think of Quantum. It seems like the best of the HDD's, but maybe in a race of snails? I can't help but think of the next trading opportunity, and not a long term hold. I think it's possible to get back to the near 20's based on all the stories of improved PC sales and shrinking inventory. It may not even be a logical conclusion, but I feel the market is rebuilding an emotion. Lets hope the bubble doesnt burst too soon.

Interestingly enough, as the HDD group came in with a -4% return, I faired better because I have traded. Surely, anyone who bought the last dip feels pretty happy. I hope we can pull together and focus this wisdom.

Is there an opportunity in components? Surely is a question. Stitch points out that I like Innovex, but it's not without reservation. It may still be too early to tell. Innovex and Hutchinson could do well, but the business of interconnects or wiring magnetic heads show 6 competitiors by my count.

Regards,

Mark
