Linda Tripp's involvement in this scandal is coming under some new scrutiny, and looking increasingly suspect. The story had been that sure, she secretly taped and ratted out her friend, but only because she was so afraid she would be discredited that she was desperate, and turned to her friend Lucien Goldberg for advice. That always seemed like a tall tale to me, and I imagine most, and that at a minimum a book deal was part of the plan. I also have wondered if there might not be more to it. What with Goldberg's close ties to the far right, through prior book deals and the like. It is now appearing that from the very beginning of their "friendship" , that Tripp urged Monica to begin a relationship with Clinton. She also apparently urged Monica to save the blue dress "in a safe" and to not wear it again, because she had become too heavy and wouldn't look good in it. Hmmmmm. Apparently Tripp urged Monica to start the affair as something "great to tell her grandkids" for some time before Monica finally decided to reveal she had already begun it before becoming "friends" with Tripp. I'm really beginning to wonder if Tripp wasn't recruited by some of the same far right wingers who were funding and directing the Jones suit. (E.g., Mellon-Scafe and friends.) Through Goldberg perhaps. Tripp was a known malcontent in the White House, and accordingly was moved to the Pentagon. The same sort of kick upstairs, salary wise, that was later accorded to Monica for somewhat different reasons. There were also some rumors among other interns and staff people about Monica "stalking" the President, apparently. (She seems to have been pretty determined.) Though not necessarily rumors that anything was actually happening. It seems very possible the Tripp was recruited to find out, and if nothing was yet happening, to try to goad Monica into a full press attack on the President's known weakness. All to be captured on tape and used to entrap the President in the Jones lawsuit. And to make Tripp rich, as her reward, in a book deal guided and ghost written, if necessary, through Lucien Goldberg. I'm not a conspiracy theory aficionado at all. But this is seeming very possible. And pretty significant, if it played out this way. And this area is not at all well explored yet by the media. Probably in part because they didn't want anything getting in-between themselves and the scandal, while it was still richly unfolding every day. Now however the story in chief is slowing down due to saturation. There may be some more room. Also, this second story edges over towards investigation, in part, of who the sources were for certain leaks. Not the Press's favorite area of investigation. In fact the just plain won't go there at all. But there are other ways of attacking this story. At least in part. Doug
