Shugart Calls Conner 'Crazy' For Starting New Company

September 28, 1998, Issue: 1128
Section: News

Mark Hachman

Speaking at the DISKCON '98 conference in San Jose last week, Alan F. Shugart, former chief
executive of Seagate Technology Inc., revealed how he'll spend his time off: He's pushing a
formal proposal to add a "None of the above" category to all California state and federal ballots.
The initiative is part of Shugart's "Friends of Ernest" social-political movement, named after his
dog.

When asked about ex-partner Finis Conner's new disk-drive company, Conner Technology plc,
Shugart replied, "Either he's crazy, or he knows something I don't know."

>>> re: QNTM's short interest I wonder if it has something to do with the acquisition? <<<

Yeah, that seems likely to me as well. The ATL acquisition calls for a stock swap of about $300 million. Perhaps some of those folks have been locking-in their profits in advance in order to preempt the anticipated selling when the deal finally closes on the 28th. It is interesting however that Quantum authorized a buyback of up to 14 million shares of its common to help offset dilution from the ATL deal. Perhaps we'll see some interesting trading activity (and opportunities) in a few weeks.
