Mike, yes, it concerns me that cdmaOne standby and talk times are still only just enough to get through a day. I know people say you can just plug it in each night, but that means more weight in the phone than would otherwise be needed. The new MSM3000 and later improvements will reduce battery drain, but Nokia is doing an excellent job of getting the best out of GSM. I don't think there is anything inherent in cdmaOne or cdma2000 to cause a high power consumption, other than the need for more processing to decipher the wanted signal from the noise, manage soft handoff, power control, multipath signals, PureVoice [TM] and all that. GSM has had a lot longer to be fine tuned. As processing technology improves, cdmaOne and cdma2000 will preferentially benefit over GSM because of the greater processing needs. As you say, meanwhile, Nokia is offering some really attractive subscriber benefits with their hot stuff handsets. But the subscriber also has to buy the GSM network, which can't give as cheap calls, nor as good voice quality. We are still very much in a race against GSM. The 3G competition is all but won. Mmeggs did a good review of the L M Ericsson article. L M Ericsson's weak position is shown by the illogical comments they make, many of which mmeggs pointed out. What is surprising is that people seem unable to see the point that if SETI's standard doesn't need the inventions of Qualcomm, L M Ericsson doesn't need to even talk about it. Plus the other foolishness. I'm trying to understand why it is mission critical for Qualcomm to be part of a 3G standard. Why not simply go ahead on their own? Or with just a few licencees such as Philips, Lucent, Motorola, Northern Telecom, a couple of Japanese and Korean? I suspect that cdmaOne will satisfy voice only and a lot of data needs. The 3G multimedia market is likely to develop a bit more slowly so that Qualcomm could handle developments on their own. Especially when you consider the money that will be rolling in from cdmaOne sales. And Globalstar. Earnings upside coming up! $80 in 5 days looks a stretch. Okay, roll it over to 31 October! One of these months...I sound like the dual mode Q Phone...any time now! It's been since 10 Feb Harvey waved it around saying it would be April. Mqurice
