Andy,

First of all, IBM has not "Officially" abandoned OS/2 Warp. In fact they are still pouring millions into continued development of OS/2. From my understanding, IBM plans to evolve OS/2 into an efficient JVM or Java OS. Remember, even though Sun is the custodian of Java, IBM is the biggest and strongest pusher of Java in the industry. When Java becomes the industry commercial use language of choice - much of the credit will go to IBM.

OS/2's future - even as a JVM or Java OS - is still not likely to be long lived. IBM itself is showing signs of transitioning their big clients quietly away for the OS/2 platform (i.e. banks and financial institutions).

So, once IBM has comfortably ensured that their large accounts have been transistioned away from OS/2, why should they continue pumping millions into maintaining a losing product. I would bet that the largest consumer of OS/2 is IBM itself.

My thoughts
