Yes those are the ramblings of evil!

And actually that is all about LSI!

Think about it - two years ago there was just one thing on the client side - PC - Wintel - Intel processors for desktop PCs and Windows 3.11/95 on the desktop - Apple was dying, MSFT was ruling the world and INTC was doing just fine during the semichip slump.

Now fastforward two years and think about this:

Apple iMac monster hit
3Com Palm monster hit
Cheap Computers monster hit - cheap Processors - big time hit bringing PCs to consumer electronics status
Linux - monster hit - another operating sytem is born
WebTV - "another operating system" (might be fading away)
Java and Jini - Java stalling a bit on the client side but doing very well on the server and Jini if they pull it off will be bigger than huge...
Windows CE - another all be it MSFT based "operating system" doing ok to well as far as I can tell
Middleware - all of a sudden a new category of software becomes really important as the critical way for disparate objects to communicate seamlessly

see a pattern - none of these were even thought of a couple of years ago - instead of a Wintel duopoly it is now a free for all!

And of course the trigger was Mr. Internet (nothing but net!).

I think what has happened is that the explosion of bandwidth opened the doors "exponentially" to a lot more opportunities and the speed with which it happened caught the old guard by surprise - now the NET is so VAST that it is too big for one or two companies to dominate - and that is a good thing for consumers and all!

You know why MSFT is scared: the operating system is becoming redundant! The browser is ruling the world. A few years ago one would have been hesitant to buy an Apple because of the lack of software - but now since everyone is on the internet for large spans of time there is no such worry for lack of "software" - if you have a browser you will be happy. (of course MSFT is pretty much all internet these days - they did well changing course in 1996 - however their cash cow, which by the way enabled them to give away IE and gain market share, might run dry if they can't charge $88 for an operating system! Of course they will be saved by NT but still they must have got scared and are very scared! They also have Windows CE.)

And why INTC is scared: No more haveing lots of chips with 90% margins for faster faster chips on the client side since everyone wants faster and faster connectivity first (then they will need the faster MPU! so they too will be alright and again they will be served by the server side with their NT and Unix based servers soon and they have seen the light and are going into the consumer electronics place (like I knew they had to eventually <g>) with Strong Arm - so they'll be fine).

Now no wonder Wintel is degenerating. Before there was just one device - the PC - INTC did the processors, MSFT the operating system and they were set to rule the world. Now no more. They need to find new friends - INTC likes Unix, MSFT likes CATV, MSFT starts MSN,
INTC goes antiMSFT with software for Real, INTC doing the consumer electronics thing, MSFT invested in Apple (mainly to put IE on the Apple I think <g>) etc etc etc...

Of course this opens the gate for a whole slew of new wonderful devices and wonderful margins for the early runners (and the early chip companies like you know who!)...
