Thank you Blue Laser for the interesting posts. It seems
clarification is needed on the differences between
VCD, SVCD, CVD, and DVD.
VCD uses MPEG-1 technology, the resolution is about 250
lines, two channels of sound.

SVCD, CVD, and DVD are based on MPEG-2 technology.
SVCD and CVD can produce pictures with a 350-line resolution,
4-channel. The reolution for DVD is >= 480 lines, 8-channel.

In terms of technology, SVCD and CVD are the same thing
except minor difference. SVCD is the nationl standard and CVD
is not endorsed by the government.

VCD diskettes are easy to make, that is why VCD player became
so popular in China. Unless companies are willing to invest a lot
to install a completely new production line to make DVD diskettes,
DVD player may not able to enjoy VCD's success vey soon.

The same production line to make VCD can be used to manufcature
SVCD or CVD diskettes with an easy modfication to the coding
section of the line. Therefore the cost for the diskettes companies
to bear is minimum. It is anticipated that it won't take too long
for those VCD diskette makers to shift from VCD to SVCD or
CVD.

Keep it in mind that most TV sets in China are of 400-line
resolution and stereo sound. DVD provides too much to
be realized by the TV sets.

Final question is which one is going to dominate the market,
SVCD or CVD? I called my relative in Beijing. My impression
is that it depends on the availability of diskettes. The first
shipment of CVDdiskettes is scheduled on Setp. 25 this year.

I just bought a CVD player with 7 CVD diskettes as bonus.
The picture quality is much much better than VCR or cable.
Almost all electronic shops (like Future Shop) are advertizing
DVD now, I always watch their display. As for the picture
quality, I can not tell any difference between the DVD's and
CVD's.
