Hutch - the 'Dow 10,000 Number' is not a right - it has to be earned - the old fashioned way!. Look back to the time it took for the Dow to finally crack 1,000. It was as recently as 1982 - and without looking back at the charts it took about 14 years - with several penetrations of the magic number in the 70s - one of which was before the terrible 73/4 bear.

Now I'm not saying that 10,000 is the late century equivalent of the old 1,000 barrier - it could be 9,000 - but 10,000 has that magic ring.
If we have a parralel situation now it could be about 2011 before we actually get through 10,000. Fanciful - well we can only speculate - but if the 73/4 scenario plays out now we will see the Dow down into the 5,000 level or even worse - so we would be talking about at least a double from there. So there may be many tests of the new magic number before we get through. Look at Tokyo, and the mountain to climb before 34,000 E
