Actually, I don't think that Vignette is a direct competitor with Broadvision. Vignette has a far less complex product that allows rapid deployment of conventional, content management sites. It also has a work flow component that simplifies the process of getting content to the web. They use the TCL scripting language for most of their server side logic. So a company like Nike or Sybase might use the Vignette product for one or two of their Web Sites.

BroadVision offers more of enterprise wide approach. They employ CORBA, C++ and Java to implement thier distributed architecture. Their systems are used to interconnect a variety of corporate data sources and merge them into an e-commerce application.

BroadVision also packages specific functional or vertical solutions for their customers. Where, Vignette, on the other hand, just provides a rapid development tool to replace the old CGI scripting process.

A typical Vignette license might go for under 100K, but a BroadVision license could run into the millions.

Is Vignette planning a public offering? They are very good a what they do and would be worth taking a look at.
