Indeed... if he really feels that things like this are essential
to having a valid political opinion, perhaps he is actually
in favor repealing the Voting Rights Act of 1965?

Kind of an odd position for a Democratic supporter to take,

I took personal offense at the arrogance of someone who would undertake to tell me what I can and cannot believe. Someone who would undertake to tell me that I couldn't possibly have both Christian and secular humanist beliefs -- and did so in a most insulting fashion.

Disagreeing with someone's beliefs is one thing. Telling them they can't possibly have them is something else quite again.
