>>cheap and easy program that will allow me to copy selected directories/files from an old computer to a new one?<<

I used to use Lap Link to copy files and programs from one computer to another. A cable(s) is provided in the box to go through the serial or parallel port. It was easy to use and ok for occasional transfers.

There is an option for direct cable connect in Win 95 and I assume in Win98. This option would be free except for the purchase of the cable. I have not used it myself. It may require a specialized cable..perhaps one with switched wires...available at computer stores.

Another option would be to purchase an external drive that configures through the parallel port ( assuming you do not have SCSI cards on both machines) ZIP, Syquest, and LS120 (Superdisk) drives come to mind.

A forth no cost option would be to pull the drive out of the old machine and install it in the new machine. You could then use Explorer to copy the files and directories.
