PRESS DIGEST- New York Times Front Page - Sept. 28

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (Reuters) - The New York Times reported the
following stories on its front page Monday:

* Gerhard Schroder, a Social Democrat, defeated Helmut Kohl Sunday in
the race to become German chancellor, opening a new one era in Europe where center-left governments now dominate the continent's politics.

* It was characteristic that even when Helmut Kohl was finally ousted in Germany's national elections, he scored a first -- this time as the first post-war German chancellor to be voted out of office.

* A package of loans for Brazil, likely to total more than $30 billion, is gradually being put together. But the bailout plan is a calculated risk: Rather than save Brazil, it could sink the country into deep recession.
