Viagra to be sold in French pharmacies in mid-October

PARIS, Sept 27 (AFP) - Frenchmen will be able to buy the anti-impotence drug Viagra as of October 15, US pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer said Saturday, but the price may be steep.

The medication, authorized for sale in EU countries on September 15, will be available by prescription to men older than 18 in dosages of 25, 50 and 100 milligrams.

One 50-milligram tablet should cost about 75 francs (12 dollars), but pharmacists will have the option of pricing the pill as they like -- and the French state health system will not reimburse or subsidize its cost.

The EU's authorisation was subject to a requirement that Viagra be sold with an explanatory note warning of possible side-effects.

These include headaches, flushing, indigestion, panic attacks, vision problems -- as well as the possibility of prolonged and painful sexual arousal. Users will be warned to consult doctors in the event of Viagra's desired effects lasting more than four hours.

The note will also state that Viagra should not be taken in conjunction with nitrates and is not recommended for women or for anyone under 18.
