I haven't followed the German elections much but I gather a lot of it is that people were just tired of him. In office for 18 years or something. The opposition was supposed to be fairly moderate; a lot of the managing of the economy was fairly locked in given the various requirements involved in starting up the Euro and the other Euroland convergences.

I don't think people in Europe are reading it as a vote for a much more socialist direction.

(Of course Germany already has plenty of things we would view that way here.)
